GET TO KNOW YOUR TOWN ARCHIVES: 2 SPECIAL SATURDAY SESSIONS - ALL RESIDENTS INVITED!
by Claire McDonald
Looking for something new and different to do this winter? Come meet the Town Archivist at two “Get To Know Your Town Archives” sessions. The sessions will be a mix of teaching, discussion, and hands-on to learn more about the Garrett Park Town Archives and what an archivist does.
Session 1: Archives 101 will be Saturday, February 22 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Town Hall. This session will cover topics such as what are archives and why they’re important, what makes the Garrett Park Town Archives so special, what do archivists do, what are some basic principles and standards of archiving, and more.
Session 2: Preservation 101 will be Saturday, February 29 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Town Hall. This session will cover topics such as what is preservation, common preservation challenges, tools we use in the archives to preserve materials, the issue of scanning and digitizing materials, and tools and tips for safeguarding your own family treasures.
You can attend one or both sessions. We’ll keep the sessions lively with lots of pictures, examples, demonstrations, and time for questions and discussion. To ensure we have enough seats (and snacks), please RSVP by sending an email or leaving a phone message with the Town Archives—let us know which session(s) you plan to attend. Our email address is Archives@GarrettParkMD.gov or phone 301-942-3050.
